A study of Andrew John Cusac’s Census records
I have searched the census records and found what I believe to be
Andrew John Cusac’s records. I haven’t been able to find him listed in the
1810 Pennsylvania census records and the 1810 Ohio census records have been
lost (all except Washington County) so I haven’t been able to determine if
Andrew John moved to Ohio or died in
1790 Unknown Township, Mifflin Co, PA census (mf roll M637_8) p. 151
John Tussick: 1 male over 16, 3 males under 16, 3 free white females
1800 Fermanagh Township, Mifflin Co, PA census (mf roll M32_37) p. 480
John Cassick: 1 male 0-10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 45 and up, 1 female 0-10, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 26-45
If we assume that both of these census records are for our Andrew John Cusac and family what information can we infer from these records?
We know that Andrew “John” Tussick/Cassick/Cusac was over 16 in 1790 and over 45 in 1800. Based upon the 1800 census record we can only assume that he was born in 1755 or earlier.
There were three males under 16 years old living in the household during the 1790 census. The one male 16-26 in the 1800 census was most likely one of the males under 16 in the 1790 census. This male would have been born between 1774 and 1784. This male is most likely Andrew who was born about 1779.
There were three males under 16 years old enumerated in the 1790 census and only two males that are the correct age in the household during the 1800 census. One of the males born between 1774 and 1790 either left the household or died before the1800 census. I believe this is an unknown male.
According to the 1800 census there was a male born between 1784 and 1790 (one male 10-16). This male was most likely one of the three males under 16 counted in the 1790 census. I believe that this is probably Daniel who was born in Jan 1790.
In the 1800 census there is a male under 10 living in the household. I believe that this is John B who was born about 1796.
We can make no determination of the ages or relationship of the three females living in the household during the 1790 census. But, I believe that they were most likely Jane Moore Cusac, Roseanne, and an unknown female.
By looking at the 1800 census we can determine that his wife Jane (Moore) Cusac was living in the household at the time of the 1800 census and was born either in or between 1755 and 1774 (she was the one female aged 26-45). If Jane was the mother of Roseanne, she would have at least have to have been born before 1761.
According to the 1800 census there was a female born between 1774 and 1784 (one female 16-26). I believe that this is an unknown female. This female is not Roseanne since she married John Rodman about 1796 and was enumerated in the 1800 Milford Twp, Mifflin Co, PA census. More research is needed to determine who this female is and what happened to her.
The female in the 1880 census that was under 10 years old was most likely Jane Cusac who was born about 1793.
Note: There are 11 years between the birth of Andrew born 1779 and Daniel in 1790. The two unknown siblings that were enumerated in the census records were born between 1774 and 1784. Were there more children born to this union who died in childhood and were not enumerated in any census?

A List of Andrew John Cusac and Jane Moore’s possible children.
There are interesting possibilities concerning the size and makeup of Andrew’s family. If we have Jane (Moore) Cusac’s birth year correct (from the census records anywhere from 1755 to 1774) and she was at least 16 years old when she married, they could have married anywhere between 1771 and 1790. If we go by the accepted birth date of 1761 for Jane and she was at least 16 when she married she would have been too young to be the mother of Roseanne. We still need to find the marriage record for Andrew and Jane to determine if all of the children belong to Jane.
Does anyone have a source for the dates for Andrew John and Jane? As it stands we have the following dates for Andrew John and Jane Moore Cusac: Andrew John Cusac (about 1750 – 1816) and Jane Moore (about 1761 - ?). Their suspected children are:
1. Roseanne Cusac born about 1774. She died about 1845 possibly in Marion Co, Indiana. She married John Rodman about 1796. He was born before 1774 and died about 1832 Perry Co, OH. Listed below are census records for Roseanne (Cusac) Rodman:
1790 unknown Township, Mifflin Co, PA census (mf roll M637_8) p. 151 John Tussick: one of 3 free white females
1800 Milford Twp,
Mifflin Co, PA census:
Jno Rodman 1 female 16-26 (b. 1774 - 84)
1810
1820
Clayton Twp, Perry Co, OH census: John Rodman 1 female 45 & up (born
before 1775)
1830 Clayton Twp,
Perry Co, OH census:
Rosana Rodman 1F 50-60 (born 1770–80)
If we assume these census records are correct for Andrew’s daughter
Roseanne, she was born about 1774. Her accepted birthplace is
I am still searching for Roseanne in the 1840 census records. It would be helpful if we could find a tombstone for Roseanne.
2. Unknown female Cusac born between 1774 and 1784.
1790 Unknown Township, Mifflin Co, PA census (mf roll M637_8) p. 151
John Tussick one of 3 free white females
1800 Fermanagh Township, Mifflin Co, PA census (mf roll M32_37) p. 480
John Cassick: 1 female 16-26 (born between 1774 – 1784)
If these are indeed the census records for our Andrew John Cusac it appears that there was a female born between 1774 and 1784. More research should be done to determine who this female is, and if she married and had children.

1850 Clayton Twp,

It seems likely that the 1850 census has the wrong age for Andrew. All
of the other census records point to the late 1770s as the birth year for
Andrew. It is highly likely that
Andrew was born in
If we have his birth date correct, upon his marriage to Jane Shaw, he was about 34 years old. It would be helpful if we had his tombstone inscription to determine his birth date. I believe that he is most likely buried in Unity Church Cemetery, New Lexington, Perry Co, OH.
Why did Andrew marry so late? Was he previously married?
4. An unknown male Cusac born between 1774 and 1784
1790 Unknown Township, Mifflin Co, PA census (mf roll M637_8) p. 151
John Tussick: one of 3 males under 16
1800 Fermanagh Township, Mifflin Co, PA census (mf roll M32_37) p. 480
John Cassick: 1 male 10-16
Who is this male child born between 1774 and 1784? According to the 1790 census there were 3 males in the household born after 1774. If this child was not Daniel then it is another male child who was born between 1774 and 1784. He could have died or moved away from home before the 1800 census.
Since there are 11 years between Andrew C and Daniel J’s births it seems likely that either some siblings died young or we have missed some siblings.
I believe that this male may be the father of William Cusac born in 1812.
5. Daniel J Cusac born 12 January 1790 Mifflin Co, PA. He died 22 April 1867 Hancock Co, OH. He married Sarah Sellers in 13 November 1812 in Muskingum Co, OH (the name on their marriage record is Daniel Consack). Sarah was the daughter of Isaac Sellers and Nancy Agnes Pauley. She was born 15 January 1794 and died 06 October 1881 Hancock Co, OH. They are both buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Findlay, Hancock Co, OH.

1860
Liberty Twp, Hancock Co, OH census: p. 2/3 hh 18 Daniel Cusic, 70, farmer,
3000, 500, Pa;
I believe that one of the two females 16-26 in the 1820 census and one of the two females 30-40 in the 1830 census was most likely Daniel’s sister Jane Cusac.
6. Jane Cusac born about 1793 PA and probably died 12 Sep 1876 in Hancock Co, OH. She married William Martin 21 Feb 1832 in Perry Co, OH. He was born about 1791 in PA and probably died 08 or 18 Jul 1875 in Hancock Co, OH. It is unlikely they had any children.
It is possible that William was married previously. Is the Terza Ann Martin born 1812 in PA actually William’s daughter from a first marriage? She was living with them during the 1850 (and possibly the 1840) census. Who was Israel M Black born 1821 in PA that was living with them during the 1850 (and probably the 1840) census?
Note: the Cemetery inscriptions for Liberty Twp, Hancock Co, OH has the following: Indian Green Cemetery, row 9: “Martin, William D died 8 Jul 1855 83y 8m 11d (large stone laying on the ground may be more on underside)”. There is no listing for Jane in the index. It is likely that her inscription may be on the underside of the stone and was not read. I am planning a visit to the cemetery to verify the dates on the stone and to look for Jane’s inscription.
The obituary index at the Hancock Co, Library has William D Martin died 18 Jul 1875 and Jane died 12 Sep 1876. There are no obituaries listed in the index for William or Jane. A search will have to be done in the probate death records as well as the newspapers.

3. Other Cusacs with an unknown relationship to Andrew John Cusac.
William Cusac was born about
1812 in
I believe that this William is more likely the son of the unknown male Cusac born between 1774 and 1784 than that of Andrew John Cusac and Jane Moore. Jane would have been anywhere between 38 - 57 years old if she gave birth to William in 1812. If we assume that the 1761 birth date is correct for Jane she would have been 51 in 1812.

Johnson Qusik was found in the1840 Irville, Licking Twp, Muskingum Co, OH census. I believe that his surname is actually CUSAC and I believe he may be the brother of William Cusac b. 1812. Johnson was listed as 20-30 in the census so he would have been born between 1810 and 1820. He was living near Christiana Hagerty who may be the mother of Sarah Hagerty who married William Cusac.
