1.   Obituary of Hilda MOORE 1903 – 1913 (Herbert Earl, Amanda Jane Ewing, Martha E COOPER, Jane Eliza CUSAC, Daniel J, Andrew John)

" The funeral of Hilda MOORE, the 9-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert MOORE of North Dakota , was held Sunday afternoon at the U. B. church. Rev. J. H. ARNOLD of Fostoria , officiated. Burial was in the West Independence cemetery. She was the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isiah MYERS, to whose home the body was taken on arrival from Dakota. The parents were unable to accompany the body because of the illness of an older daughter, and Guy MOORE, an uncle of Hilda, made the trip."

2.   Obituary and death record of Boyd SMITH 1914- 1914 (Inez POE, Robert M, Margaret CUSAC, Daniel J, Andrew John)

                                                      "New-Born Babe Dies.

A young son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Henry SMITH, southwest of town, Friday morning. The little life was only of short duration. The body was buried in the McComb cemetery Friday afternoon."

                          17 January 1914 Morning Republican ( Findlay , OH ) p. 11

Boyd SMITH died on 15 January 1914 in Hancock Co, OH.

                    Online Ohio Death Index, 1913 – 1917, vol. 1268 certificate 3223

I checked the Hancock County , Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions, Pleasant Township , by the Hancock County Chapter OGS, 1995, p. 40. There is a tombstone for Boyd SMITH in row 13, 2nd Addition, McComb Union Cemetery however there are no dates on the tombstone. Boyd is buried next to William F and Theodosia SMITH who I believe are his paternal grandparents.

Circumstantial evidence leads me to believe this “new-born babe” is actually Boyd SMITH. I still need to check the Hancock County Probate births and deaths or send for the Ohio Death Index record to verify.

Ray Van DORN, 45, Meets Death When Weapon is Accidentally Discharged

                          WAS ON HUNTING TRIP

Funeral Services to Be Held Tomorrow Morning at U. B. Church

The accidental discharge of a rifle while he was climbing over a fence instantly killed Ray Van DORN, 45-year-old Pleasant township farmer yesterday morning. Van DORN left his home early in the morning to go hunting.

When he failed to return for dinner at the noon hour, members of his family and neighbors formed a searching party. He was found beside a fence in the woods some distance from the farm house.

                                                              Verdict Given

Dr. Harold O. CROSBY, Hancock county coroner, was called and gave a verdict of accidental death. He said that the man apparently had been dead for five or six hours before he was found. The bullet from the rifle entered his head.

Mr. Van DORN is the father of Mrs. Everett COLLINS, of Findlay and Ray Van DORN, Jr., at home. He is survived also by his widow, nee Ollie SPENCE. He was the son of Brainerd and Mary Jane Van DORN and was born in Pleasant township in 1887.

I believe this to be Ray Van DORN’s death record. There is a disclaimer on the web site that they are currently working on correcting the 1928 – 37 indexes as they have the most OCR errors. I believe this record has his name misspelled, the death date is correct.

Both Ray and Mollie Van DORN are buried in row 11, 2nd addition of McComb Union Cemetery, Pleasant Twp, Hancock Co, OH.
